Mobile technology

• Mobile phone 1946- But the first portable mobile was invented in 1972 the DynaTAC. In 1973 a rival made another one.
• Walkie talkies
• Games- 1980, the world first portable hand-held console, then Donkey Kong Junior, Donkey Kong was the first dual screened.
• iPods-2001 saw the introduction of the iPod 5gb capable of storing 10000 songs. It has seen numerous upgrades in capacity and functionality, including video and photo capability as well and rudimentary games.
• Dynabook- 1968 working for Xerox Parc electronics. Alan kay came up with the concept for a portable computer that everyone could use. It would be so simple that even a child could use it. Now known as a pda or laptop.
• Tablet PC- the dynabook didn’t come into its own until the mid nineties with the Advent of the IBM ThinkPad 750p. Now that handwriting recognition is built into Windows XP SP@ and vista.
• Watches- the first practical LCD display was invented in 1969 by James Fregason
• Pocket calculators- In 1973 Sharp released the first LCD calculator. Allowing 100’s of hours use from a single AA Battery.
• Computers. 1981 Adam Osbourne develops the Osbourne 1. The first portable computer. It had 64kb of memory a screen resolution of 52x24 pixels, weighed almost 11kg and cost $1795.
• 1984 sees the arrival of the first PDA, the Psion1. It had a calendar, clock, address book and calculator.
• The Psion’s success continued until the late 90’s.
• 1989 one of the first attempts at a laptop was Macintosh Portable didn’t run MS-DOS and was very expensive.
• 1989 originally an 8bit B&W hand held console the Nintendo Gameboy. Three revisions later it is now the NDS.
• Atari Lynx was the first colour console every built. Built in 1989. More advanced than Nintendo but failed due to marketing
• 1990 the Game Gear was Sega’s answer to the Gameboy and was one of the first commercially successful colour games console. The Game Gear had a TV tuner.
• 1992 the first digital phone network comes to Europe. Similar to Motorola 3200
• 1993 the Newton message pad was launched. It was the first PDA to have handwriting recognition. It had a 5.5” screen.
• eMate the modified version of Newton with a keyboard.
• Palm Pilot-1996 instant success. Graffiti so much better than the Newtons Handwriting Recognition system. Palm also develops smart Phones with Treo.
• Nokia 9000 the first Smartphone, email, fax and text.
• 2000 Bluetooth was introduced in the Ericsson T36
• The first colour screen in 2000 Mitsubishi D502iHyper and 256 colours.
• Nokia N-Gage in 2003 mobile phone with a games console.
• PDA, XDA, MDA- 2003 introduces executive PDA’s from Windows mobile OS/Pocket PC. The PDA’s are now integrated with mobile phones. Have their own keyboards. Sat Nav also integrated.
• Some cameras have Sat Nav built in to it so it knows wherever in the world you have taken your picture.
• Nintendo DS packed with Wireless Technology voice recognition infa red connectivity. 2 screens.
• PSP 2004- wide screened, wi-fi, infa red and USB connectivity UMD disc was also used to sell movies. High cost and relatively low quality very few UMD movies now get made.
• Blackberry 2006- 7250 not a mobile but much more devices.
• iPhone- Makes the use of screened based keyboard.
• Nike air shoes iPod.
• WDA wearable PDA’s now being prototyped.
